Next Big Thing in Wood-Ridge

03.12.2011, 15:50

A TRENDY, large but human-scaled "New Urbanism" development is to begin rising this fall in Wood-Ridge, an unpretentious town of 7,600 people in southern Bergen County.

Wood-Ridge is a densely settled community and the development will cover 80 acres, prompting the question: Where will they put it? The answer: in an old parking lot, a vast expanse of rutted asphalt and weeds used now to store tractor trailers.

Let’s go to the Pictures

08.11.2011, 11:23

‘It took me almost an hour to climb the hill into town to see a film at one of our tiny halls - but walk I did... because going to the pictures was an event in itself.’ Ruskin Bond reminisces on the good old days.

Hotel Budapest

My love affair with the Cinema began when I was five and ended when I was about fifty. Not because I wanted it to, but because all my favourite cinema halls were closing down - being turned into shopping malls or garages or just disappearing altogether.

Medusa Hotel, Sydney

21.09.2011, 17:07

Arriving after nightfall, the Medusa's full-on pinkness was lost on us as we crossed its threshold. Behind the raspberry exterior, a bubble-gum pink lobby awaited, its tousled, textured walls extending an intriguing welcome.

A standard-issue Sydney fashionista looked up, stony-faced, from the reception desk. But before he could get beyond first base, in swept a furious, sweat-dripping, fresh-from-the-gym gent who was in no mood to wait in line. "What the fuck is going on, here?!" he started up, to no one in particular. Cue much huffing, puffing, glaring and some speedy checking in.

YouTube stars don't always welcome record deals

11.08.2011, 10:23

The Dutch village of Oosterbeck is not a very big place -- population 31,944. So it must have been quite a shock when a local hotel received a phone call from Atlantic Records looking for assistance in tracking down an 18-year-old resident named Esmee Denters.

The label representative had the astonished hotel clerk provide phone numbers for every Denters listing in the local phone book and then called each one until he reached Esmee's very surprised mom.

Marriott plans high-def TVs with 'digital connectivity panels'

05.07.2011, 10:20

Marriott International announces Monday an upgrade of televisions at high-end hotels. It's aimed at providing better pictures, more programming and centralization of electronic gadgets used for work and entertainment.

Marriott's initiative gives it a slight edge on competitors also scrambling to meet the demands of multitasking techno-guests. Hilton, Sheraton and Hyatt Place have similar plans.

Marriott (MAR) will install 32-inch high-definition, liquid-crystal display televisions. They're attached to "digital connectivity panels" that allow a guest to connect several digital devices — laptops, camcorders, digital cameras, video games and iPods.

Regrettably, they get the picture

03.06.2011, 17:16

FOR a trip to Canada in October, we bought a digital camera, took one picture and placed it back in the original box and into our checked luggage. Upon arrival in Vancouver, nothing seemed suspect until I opened the box - no camera.
